Master Y’s Journey – Echoes of Determination

On August 21, 2024, Master Yoan’s mother was introduced to the M&S Foundation. Master Yoan, a determined 10-year-old boy from Rodrigues, has faced life’s challenges with remarkable resilience. Born with a hearing impairment, his audiology report indicated a profound hearing loss in his right ear and moderately severe mixed loss in his left ear. The audiologist had recommended moderate amplification and a wide frequency response for his left ear, which will greatly benefit his hearing ability.

When Master Yoan’s previous hearing aid broke, keeping up in school and interacting with his peers became even more challenging. Despite this setback, he adapted by relying on visual cues, such as lip reading and putting in extra effort to stay engaged.

Master Yoan’s parents, though always supportive, were unable to afford a new hearing aid due to financial constraints. Understanding the challenges his family faced, Yoan maintained a positive attitude and adapted as best he could. His determination to keep learning never wavered.

The M&S Foundation team, dedicated to making a positive impact in Master Yoan’s life, assumed 83% of the total cost for his hearing aids. Their support was intended to help him overcome this challenge and thrive.

On October 21, the M&S team met with Master Yoan and his mother. He shared his love for playing Call of Duty and Roblox on his phone whenever he could, and he expressed a passion for mathematics at school; numbers always made sense to him, even when other things felt a bit out of reach.

Without his hearing aids, Master Yoan sometimes missed parts of conversations, especially if people spoke quietly. Still, he had become quite adept at reading expressions and picking up cues. His mother fondly recalled the day they went to the specialized shop to pick up his new hearing aids. Smiling, she looked at him expectantly, and he whispered, “Mum… I can hear.” In that moment, both mother and son felt an immense wave of relief and joy—a sense of victory they had long awaited. Now, the sounds of laughter, friends’ voices, and classroom lessons would be part of his world, no longer muted by silence.

Reflecting on his journey, Master Yoan shared a message for other kids facing similar challenges: “Be attentive, don’t give up.” He wanted them to know that sound brings new experiences, but it’s just one part of their path. There are many ways to connect, grow, and succeed—just as he had.

What is Moderate Amplification and Wide Frequency Response?

Moderate Amplification – This setting increases sound levels to make speech and other environmental sounds more audible, without causing discomfort from excessive volume. It enhances hearing by adjusting the volume to improve clarity while minimising distortion and feedback, ensuring a clear and comfortable listening experience.

Wide Frequency Response – A wide frequency response in hearing aids allows them to amplify a broad range of sound frequencies, from low to high. This feature helps users hear different pitches and tones more clearly, making sounds and speech sound more natural and distinct.
