Master L. C’s Journey – Fortitude and Determination

Master L.C, a 6-month-old baby boy, accompanied by his parents visited the M&S Foundation Team on the 16th of June 2023. An anxious mother, seeking assistance to help her baby, came to know of M&S Foundation through their pediatric surgeon. Upon listening to her heartfelt request and recognising the urgency of the baby’s condition, M&S Foundation driven by authentic compassion and care for the little one and his family, acted promptly to assist.
Master L.C was diagnosed with Myelomeningocele also referred to as open ‘Spina Bifida’. This congenital condition, often categorised as a birth defect, occurs when a child’s backbone (spine) and spinal canal fail to close before birth. Following a preliminary surgery to insert a stent, challenges persisted as the baby experienced ongoing swelling in the lower back. A subsequent surgery for stent replacement became necessary and the foundation fully funded the surgical procedure. This little toddlers’ journey embodies fortitude and determination and the unwavering support of the M&S Foundation upholding his wellbeing, hopes to illuminate the path amidst life’s challenges.

*Spina bifida is a birth defect in which an area of the spinal column doesn’t form properly

*Myelomeningocele is the most severe form of spina bifida, a congenital condition where an opening in the baby’s back allows a sac of fluid to protrude. Within this sac, the spinal cord and nerves are damaged, leading to significant disabilities such as impaired bladder and bowel control, leg or foot sensory loss and paralysis. To address this condition, the primary corrective procedure is an open stent surgery. During this surgery, a neurosurgeon makes a small incision in the patient’s back and carefully inserts a stent or shunt device to redirect excess cerebrospinal fluid away from the exposed spinal cord, alleviating pressure and preventing further harm.
